Toddler Classroom

12-24 Month Olds

Toddler Program

12-24 months brings a flurry of activity, movement, language and experimentation with independence.  Learning Beyond focuses on building practical skills, language and social emotional learning, all with relationship-focused teaching and care at the heart.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning engages all young children in hands-on exploration and problem-solving, building critical thinking, creativity collaboration and communication skills that become the foundation for lifelong learning and adaptability. The 12 to 24-month-old children learn best by experiencing the world with all their senses, providing them with opportunities and language to understand the world around them.

Loving adult interaction is critical at this time when children are beginning to articulate their needs and wants. Teachers engage in meaningful dialogue, helping the toddlers to identify and label items in their environment.  As children spend more time alongside their peers, teachers encourage appropriate vocabulary for communicating feelings. Learning Beyond provides repetition of the same language and literacy activities throughout the week to foster the toddlers’ connections to the songs, stories and fingerplays.

Toddlers are naturally active, practicing and developing their coordination and strength.  Our classrooms are designed to build motor skills through safe, stimulating large motor play areas.  Learning Beyond provides structured activities, in the indoor and outdoor environments to enhance both gross and fine motor development with stimulating experiences.

Since toddlers are just beginning to understand social skills, teachers gently guide the children in this area to foster understanding of how to play cooperatively and express their feelings.  Children are encouraged and praised for positive behavior and re-directed as necessary. Our program includes daily practice in cleaning up toys, washing hands and sharing. Toddlers are invited to participate in daily routines to develop self-help skills and positive self-image.

Included in the cost of your tuition, toddlers are served breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack made daily in the school kitchen. Menus are CACFP approved.  Toddlers have a menu designed to provide nutritious fresh foods that are not choking hazards. While eating, toddlers are working on a variety of skills, including but not limited to eating unassisted, using traditional utensils, sitting in a traditional chair, and table manners.

Diapers are constantly monitored throughout the day and are changed as often as needed.  Teachers check diapers every hour, changing them if they are wet or soiled.  Diaper changing is approached in a calm and loving manner, utilizing that time for one-on-one interactions with your toddler.

Nap time follows lunch, from 12-2 pm. The Colorado Department of Health and Human Services requires that all children under the age of 5 be given a peaceful classroom environment to rest on a mat with a crib sheet and blanket from home. Soft non-stimulating music is played to enhance rest time. Teachers use this time to comfort children one-on-one with a calming naptime routine.

All toys and other items used throughout the day are cleaned nightly with a sanitizing solution approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health. Upon entering the classroom, we ask that all children wash their hands with soap and water to prevent the spread of outside germs.  While we go to great lengths to keep your child healthy, illness is inevitable in toddler classrooms. Toddlers are still working on understanding they can investigate an object without putting it directly into their mouths. In the event that your child becomes ill, the office will call to inform you of the illness, and you are required to pick your child up within one hour of the call. Your toddler may return to school once they are symptom-free without medication for 24 hours. Final approval to return to the classroom is at the discretion of the center director.

Junior Preschool Classroom

2-3 Year Olds

Junior Preschool Program

From 24-36 months, older toddlers are learning from their behaviors and choices, trying new things, getting messy and learning how to clean up. Learning Beyond focuses on scaffolding children’s learning and interactions, providing them with choices to empower them.  They have daily practice with STEAM, Language and Literacy, Physical Development and Music and Movement.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning engages all young children in hands-on exploration and problem-solving, building critical thinking, creativity collaboration and communication skills that become the foundation for lifelong learning and adaptability. As the older toddlers are expanding their awareness, using STEAM centered lessons helps them process and make sense of the world around them.

An environment rich in language encourages verbal skills. Teachers are given intentional vocabulary and dialogue through Learning Beyond to introduce the older toddlers to new vocabulary, label the world around them and openly express their wants and desires. The children are introduced to new literature, songs and finger-plays to expand their daily experiences.

Learning Beyond Paper incorporated daily opportunities to build both fine and gross muscle groups and coordination through:

  • Creative movement activities
  • Toddler focused playground equipment, such as tricycles and push cars
  • Daily process art
  • Age-appropriate interest centers

The hallmark for children 24-36 months old is an increasing need for independence. Older toddlers want to do everything on their own and teachers encourage their attempts with praise and rewards. Having realistic expectations of normal behavior allows teacher to effectively guide and teach the toddlers appropriate social and independence skills. Daily practice of skills like taking care of their belongings, hygiene and taking turns with toys is imbedded within the Learning Beyond Paper lessons, giving the children real world practice.

Diapers are constantly monitored throughout the day and are changed as often as needed. Teachers check diapers every hour, changing them if they are wet or soiled. Potty training is a major focus in the Older Toddler classrooms. Older Toddler teachers are knowledgeable and passionate about helping support their students and families through the process of potty training. It is handled on an individual basis, as the toddlers demonstrate that they are developmentally and emotionally ready for this step.

Preschool Classroom

3-4 Year Olds

Preschool Program

Three-year-olds are able to figure out unique ways to do something and want to find out why – a lot! Learning Beyond’s use of open-ended questions in daily activities heightens curiosity and problem-solving skills at this stage, providing opportunities for active engagement as trusted learners.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning engages all young children in hands-on exploration and problem-solving, building critical thinking, creativity collaboration and communication skills that become the foundation for lifelong learning and adaptability.

The Core Knowledge sequence is a set of model guidelines describing fundamental competencies and specific knowledge that can provide a solid, coherent foundation for future academic success.

Daily exposure to a language rich environment promotes early childhood literacy to create lifelong learners.  Learning Beyond uses multiple modalities to introduce language and literacy to the three-year-old classroom, using daily reading sessions, pretend play and songs to embed the core concepts for reading and writing readiness.

Learning Beyond Paper incorporated daily opportunities to build both fine and gross muscle groups and coordination through

  • Creative movement activities
  • Daily process art
  • Age-appropriate interest centers
  • Group cooperative games, such as Tag and Duck, Duck, Goose
  • Sensory explorations

Learning Beyond helps the children build number sense right from the start.  Using manipulatives, music and rhymes the children practice counting comparisons, measurement, spatial awareness, patterning, sequencing, matching, sorting and problem-solving skills.

Three is the age when children prefer playing with other children and friendships begin to blossom.  Teachers serve as guides to assist with the delicate task of teaching the children how to play cooperatively. The children are realizing their capabilities to complete activities independently and will become easily frustrated if they do not find success. Developing healthy social skills is extremely important, and teachers use praise, rewards and problem-solving to achieve desired goals from the children.

Diapers are constantly monitored throughout the day and are changed as often as needed.  Teachers check diapers every hour, changing them if they are wet or soiled.  Potty training may continue into the Preschool classrooms.  It is handled on an individual basis, as the children demonstrate that they are developmentally and emotionally ready for this step.  Children are assisted in the bathroom as necessary, learning and practicing hygiene habits, such as wiping, and washing hands.

Children who do not sleep after a reasonable period of time are given an appropriate toy to play with.

All toys and other items used throughout the day are cleaned nightly with a sanitizing solution approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health. Upon entering the classroom, we ask that all children wash their hands with soap and water to prevent the spread of outside germs.  While we go to great lengths to keep your child healthy, illness is inevitable in early childhood classrooms.   In the event that your child becomes ill, the office will call to inform you of the illness, and you are required to pick your child up within one hour of the call. Pre-Kindergarten Classroom

4-5 year olds

Pre-K Program

Four-year-olds continue to build upon skills they learned in preschool, building layers of learning and knowledge through practice and novel opportunities.  Children’s development of language grows into an understanding of early reading and writing in preparation for kindergarten.  Through active learning and scaffolding, pre-kindergarteners can build confidence and thrive in a predictable classroom environment.

An entire month is spent looking in-depth at each of the following virtues and reflecting on their importance:

  • Respect: treating others politely and kindly
  • Patience: Waiting your turn
  • Gratitude: Thankfulness for the gift of life and the gifts of life
  • Generosity: Giving without thinking of receiving
  • Courage: Doing what is right and admitting when wrong
  • Compassion: Feeling what others are feeling and trying to help their troubles
  • Forgiveness: Having enough heart to let go of hurt
  • Diligence: Working your very hardest and staying with it
  • Cooperation: Play and work fairly with others
  • Loyalty: Being faithful and true to our duties, relations and ideals
  • Responsibility: Doing our part
  • Hope: Finding light in the darkness and trusting in the right ending

Daily exposure to a language rich environment promotes early childhood literacy to create lifelong learners.  Learning Beyond uses multiple modalities to introduce language and literacy to the four-year-old classroom, using daily reading sessions, pretend play and songs to embed the core concepts for reading and writing readiness. Learning Beyond meets the children where they are in their early literacy skills and provides opportunities for growth for every child.

Learning Beyond Paper incorporated daily opportunities to build both fine and gross muscle groups and coordination through

  • Creative movement activities
  • Sensory explorations
  • Fine motor activities such as cutting and name writing

Learning Beyond helps the children build number sense right from the start.  Using manipulatives, music and rhymes the children practice counting comparisons, measurement, spatial awareness, patterning, sequencing, matching, sorting and problem-solving skills.
